Brunei to start stoning gays to death

Brunei In a brutal crackdown on sexuality, Brunei will start stoning anyone it finds guilty of homosexuality or adultery.

The small, Muslim-majority kingdom started to enforce strict Islamic laws back in 2013. At the time, the Sultan of Brunei, Hassanal Bolkiah, wanted to include the death penalty for adultery and gay sex. His plans were put on hold following international protests.

Starting next week, the country has decided to go forward with these evil laws.

“Brunei’s Penal Code is a deeply flawed piece of legislation containing a range of provisions that violate human rights,” Rachel Chhoa-Howard, a researcher for Amnesty International,. “As well as imposing cruel, inhuman and degrading punishments, it blatantly restricts the rights to freedom of expression, religion and belief, and codifies discrimination against women and girls.”

The country is quite conservative. Alcohol and premarital sex are banned in Brunei, and homosexuality can already result in a 10 year prison term. It is now hoping to fully implement a stricter version of sharia law.

“To legalize such cruel and inhuman penalties is appalling of itself,” added Chhoa-Howard said. “Some of the potential ‘offenses’ should not even be deemed crimes at all, including consensual sex between adults of the same gender.”

Actor and activist George Clooney calling on people to boycott the country and some of the commercial properties it holds around the world.

He wrote:

A couple of years ago two of those hotels in Los Angeles, The Bel-Air and The Beverly Hills Hotel were boycotted by many of us for Brunei’s treatment of the gay community. It was effective to a point. We cancelled a big fundraiser for the Motion Picture Retirement Home that we’d hosted at the Beverly Hills Hotel for years. Lots of individuals and companies did the same. But like all good intentions when the white heat of outrage moves on to the hundred other reasons to be outraged, the focus dies down and slowly these hotels get back to the business of business. And the Brunei Investment Agency counts on that.

He went on to list the hotels people need to avoid. They are:

Brunei is a rich little nation, being the third-largest oil producer in Southeast Asia, And the Sultan, himself, is a billionaire. It will take a little more than some rich celebs canceling their hotel stays to take on this kind of evil.
