Libya may no longer be run by a crazed dictator, but it has not become a bastion of progressive ideals, either.
This week, a delegate from the country advised a planning meeting of the 47-nation UN Human Rights Council that gays were a threat to the world. He said that LGBT rights "affect religion and the continuation and reproduction of the human race."
He added that Libya would have sided with other Islamic states in opposing the council's 2011 resolution last June, which called for a UN report on discriminatory laws and violence against the gay community.
"Today's homophobic outburst by the new Libyan government, together with its commission of gross violations of human rights, underscores the serious questions many have about the new regime's commitment to improving on the dark record of its predecessor," said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.
One would think that a country that fought so hard against oppression would be a tad more sensitive to human rights. Of course, that only happens in Hollywood movies.
