Christopher Plummer scores Oscar for gay role

Christopher Plummer, now 82 years old, won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor last night for his role in Beginners. He played Hal Fields, a widower who reveals to his son (Ewan McGregor) that he is both gay and has terminal cancer. This is the actor's first Oscar.

He was considered the front runner for the award, especially after picking up trophies for the role at the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards and the BAFTA Awards.

“Gay characters are human beings,” he said after his win at the Golden Globes last month. “We're all exactly the same. That's the reason I played it the way I did, not as a caricature. They're a part off our society since the Egyptians, the Greeks – it's part of the human condition.”

If you haven't seen Beginners yet, put in it on your "to watch" list. It's a great movie, and Ewan McGregor is always easy to look at.
